Deep Pits: In Memory of Robin Williams

What?! Robin Williams?! No!! WHY?

I know why.

Those who can’t fathom what would bring someone to suicide, are very, very fortunate. I just ask, please don’t judge.

I’m suddenly slammed against an ancient wall of my deepest pit, the air knocked out of me, taken off-guard by a memory of immense, unrelenting pain that beats away all reason, all hope.

I fought against that pit with everything I had, for years and years and years. If you’re there now, if you are thinking of giving up, fight for your life.

Why? Because you know.

You know to the core of your being, with a certainty stronger than the greatest pain, that this is not you. This pain, this depression, this pit — it is NOT the truth of who you are. You know, you KNOW that this depression is a lie about you! It is a lie, so fight it, FIGHT IT with all that you have.

You are a warrior. Look at yourself in a different way, and see. Even though it may seem silly or wrong, you must try, because you are not made for pits.

You are a Warrior.

You are going to fight this battle, because that is what Warriors do.

“Why do I stand up here? I stand upon my desk to remind myself that we must constantly look at things in a different way. You see the world looks very different up here … Just when you think you know something, you have to look at it in another way. Even though it may seem silly or wrong, you must try.”

~Robin Williams, Dead Poets Society (1989)
